    I think you might want to consider looking into using the BuddyPress plugin for WordPress MU. It creates a social networking layer that is similar to facebook in possibilities. It has a clean way of listing and managing members, and is a very powerful tool for discussions. Users can create discussion groups, and it is integrated with bbPress to allow for forums.
